The setting for the novel

Colm Toibin's interviews

In this interview with the Washington Post, Colm Toibin discusses his inspiration for the novel Brooklyn and the parallels between Eilish and the "single interesting consciousness of a very intelligent but powerful woman...", he also discusses the importance of the time his female characters spend alone, after key events, in time that is, "inward, reflective" and then describes, "a vulnerable, sensitive intelligent woman, watching the world with a sense of unease."

Reading and Responding

Colm Toibin's Brooklyn

We are so fortunate to be studying this wonderful novel for the Reading and Responding section of VCE English in 2013.

In class, and via this blog, we will examine the themes and background of the text, but before we begin a great launching pad to further your understanding of the text is to read the reviews of the novels.

Reviews:

Consider too the titles given to the reviews.

The New York Times - 'The Reluctant Emigrant' by Liesl Schillinger
The London Review of Books - 'The Coldest Place on Earth' by Liam McIlvanney
The Guardian - 'The Country Girl' by Colm Toibin
